How to Tip Without Money

When I resumed massage in April, I started back with some new policies, procedures and equipment. Many of these: masking required, use of air cleaners and humidifier, longer time between appointments are to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. I have to admit, I was pretty nervous about all of the changes and client perception of them. The one change that has received the most feedback has been a surprise.

That change is: I no longer accept monetary tips. “Why is that?” ask many clients after their massage, tip in hand ready to show their appreciation. I would awkwardly share my reasoning as the client dejectedly puts the cash back into their wallet wondering how to best acknowledge that they enjoyed their experience. I decided to explain.

Over the year of being closed due to COVID-19, I did a lot of thinking about my massage practice. I genuinely want to provide a positive, nurturing experience for each and every person who enters my office. I also want massage to be part of your regular health and wellness routine.

So, I considered other health and wellness professionals: doulas, midwives, acupuncturists, chiropractors, health coaches. None of these professionals take tips. Rather, they charge what they need to receive. This allows the professional to know what to expect financially from each service they provide. It also eliminates any grey areas as to what the expectations are. Thus, I adjusted my rates and discontinued accepting tips.

Now, you may be wondering: How do I show my appreciation for the benefits I receive? Here are some non-monetary ways to express that you are benefiting from your session:

  • Arrive a few minutes before your appointment start time to use the restroom and discuss your goals for today’s session.

  •   If you are unable to make your scheduled session, cancel in advance.

  • Provide feedback during your session. I really do want to know if you are comfortable, if the pressure is ok, if there is a certain area you would like me to go back to. Your honest feedback allows me to provide you with the best possible experience I can.

  •   Provide feedback after your session by leaving a review.

    •   My scheduling software allows you to leave a review.

    • o   You can leave a Google review on my business profile by Googling women’s massage in Bakersfield.

  •   Refer a friend, family member or colleague.

  •   Schedule another massage.

I hope it provides you peace of mind knowing that you can express yourself in so very many ways that do not cost you money.

Until next time,
